The Billings High School volleyball team has some holes to fill from last year’s team that advanced to the Class 1 state quarterfinals.

But first-year Lady Wildcats coach Brandi Sillivan believes she has a group that can take Billings deep into the postseason again in 2017.

“They definitely have the volleyball knowledge that a varsity team needs,” Sillivan said during a camp in July.

Billings beat Plato in the Class 1, District 6 tournament before edging Hurley in sectionals. The Lady Wildcats fell to Eminence in quarterfinals, ending the season with a 19-12-1 record.

While Billings loses First-Team All-SWCL Conference libero Kacie Baxter to graduation, the Lady Wildcats return two first-team selections in Elizabeth Gearing (junior) and Bailey Groves (sophomore). Billings also graduated second-team selection Sarah Sommer but returns honorable-mention pick Kortney Kimberling (junior).

Alexys VanZandt (junior DS/L), Carlea Jenkins (junior OH/M), Bailie Williams (sophomore OH), Morgan Heimer (sophomore RS/M) and Madie Verch (sophomore DS) will all compete for playing time.

“I think we’ll have a strong season,” Sillavan said. “They know how to read a court or what might be open or what to hit. They’re already able to tell each other what’s open and what needs to be done.”
