The New Covenant High School volleyball team hopes to take a step in the right direction this season.

Lindsey Letsinger, now in her fourth season at the helm, thinks the Lady Warriors have the tools in place to do so.

New Covenant has the combination of veteran and rookie players that could be the difference in taking the Lady Warriors to the next level.

But it could be a building process for New Covenant as the season progresses. Success might not come over night, but there is potential.

“We should be okay,” Letsinger said at the Licking Volleyball camp July 13. “My freshmen who are coming up, my sophomores who are coming up are really key players. It’s just a matter of getting them used to playing at the high-school level and varsity level.”

With the exception of 6-foot-1 sophomore middle hitter Madeline Kruse, the Lady Warriors will not have a tall team.

“We’re on the short side, but we’ll have pretty good defense,” Letsinger said.

Letsinger got a glimpse of that in July when New Covenant competed against opposing teams for the first time this summer at the Licking Volleyball Camp.

She was happy with the results.

“This is the first time we’ve actually scrimmaged against another team,” Letsinger said. “I think they played well for their first time out.”

New Covenant loses two players from last year’s team that went 13-16-2 after losing to Plato in a Class 1 District 6 semifinal.

Anchoring that team were senior middles Carlyn Henson and Emerson Russell, both first-team all-Mark Twin All-Conference selections in 2016.

Returning is second-team all-conference pick Claire Cannafax, who moves to the middle as a junior after setting for the New Covenant as a sophomore last year.

Also returning is Jacy Lamb (senior libero), Ally Pankiewicz (senior outside), Susan Cha (sophomore weak-side hitter/ defensive specialist) and Kruse.

New to the mix is Macy Seevers (freshman setter), Madi Seevers (freshman outside hitter) and Emily Sparks (freshman hitter).

After going 20-9-3 in 2015 and 15-11-2 in 2014, the Lady Warriors are looking to make a run at a conference and district title.
