2016-17 wrestling preview: Glendale

Glendale has seen some strong growth and development from its wrestlers the last couple years as the program has continued to improve. Wrestlers have built upon teammate’s success.

One of those was graduated Ozark Conference 220-pound champion and state qualifier Deidryck Tichner.

“Deidryck wrestled junior varsity for two years under All-State Chandler Klein. Deidryck came in to his senior year with high goals. He made it to the state tournament and came within a couple points of earning a state medal. His leadership and worth ethic will be missed,” Glendale coach Bud Donnell said.

Bailey Fisher is the lone returning Ozark Conference placer in Bailey Fisher who was third at 113 pounds last year.

Glendale’s other top returning wrestlers are Ian White (106 pounds), Chris Hansen (132 pounds) and Brett Davis (220 pounds).

“They all have their sights set on qualifying to the state tournament,” Donnell said. “Hansen has put in a lot of work in the off-season. He wrestled for the Tri-Lakes Freestyle and Greco team and attended various wrestling camps in the Midwest.”

Glendale has several freshmen that are looking to make an impact on varsity this year. Senior Ian Marshall is also coming off the football field to man the 285-pound weight class.

Donnell has several goals he wants to see his team accomplish this season.

“Our team is looking to put a solid dual and tournament team together. We always have a goal to be the best dual team in Springfield, bring back a trophy from a tournament and have wrestlers compete at the state tournament,” Donnell said.

Glendale opens the season on Nov. 29 at Kickapoo in a triangular against Hillcrest and Kickapoo.
