Mizzou snaps skid for first SEC win under Odom

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Drew Lock (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) threw a pair of touchdowns, and Damarea Crockett (Little Rock, Ark.) ran for another to lead Mizzou to a 26-17 win over Vanderbilt for its first Southeastern Conference win of the season.

Crockett ran for 154 yards – just shy of his career-high – and the score on 20 carries, and J’Mon Moore (Missouri City, Texas) hauled in both scores as part of an eight-catch, 138-yard afternoon.

The Tigers (3-7, 1-5 SEC) also created all sorts of havoc on defense, notching six sacks, nine tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions of Vandy’s Kyle Shurmur.

Mizzou got on the board first, taking advantage of a short field following a third-down Charles Harris (Kansas City, Mo.) sack and a great punt return by Johnathon Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.). Mizzou used several big rushes from Crockett and he finished the drive with a four-yard TD run to give Mizzou a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point.

After Vanderbilt (4-6, 1-5 SEC) was moving the ball, Mizzou LB Joey Burkett (Jefferson City, Mo.) hauled in his second career interception on a tip drill to stall a Vanderbilt drive deep in Mizzou territory. The drive didn’t result in points for Mizzou, but sophomore punter Corey Fatoney (Franklin, Tenn.) was able to pin Vanderbilt deep on his next two punts, giving the Commodores a long field.

The Commodores began the second quarter pinned deep and it paid off for Mizzou as a third-down pick-six for Aarion Penton (St. Louis, Mo.) gave Mizzou a 13-0 lead with 14:08 remaining in the quarter. Mizzou then got another huge play, this time an 82-yard pitch-and-catch from Lock to Moore, extending the Mizzou advantage to 19-0 following another missed PAT.

Vandy cut the lead to 19-7 and added a field goal with 2:13 remaining in the half and the score was 19-10 in favor of Mizzou at the break. The Commodores got the ball to open the second half and went 75 yards on 10 plays, capped by a one-yard Ralph Webb touchdown, cutting Mizzou’s lead to 19-17.

Mizzou then drove all the way to the Vandy four-yard line, but a missed field goal resulted in no points for the Tigers. It again happened late in the quarter as Mizzou had first and goal from the one, but a fumbled snap gave Vanderbilt the ball and held Mizzou off the scoreboard again. The third quarter ended with Vanderbilt driving after taking over after the fumble.

The Tigers came up with a key stop thanks to Harris’ third sack and took the ensuing possession and Lock found Moore in the endzone on a four-yard grab to extend Mizzou’s lead to 26-17. Mizzou was able to go into victory formation on the Commodore 2-yard-line following back-to-back sacks by Harris and Nate Howard (St. Louis, Mo.), and Marcell Frazier (Portland, Ore.), and a Penton pass break-up on fourth down.
