Many new names coming to Crane lineup

Bryan Harmon begins his ninth season as the head coach of the Crane Pirates baseball program and carries with him a career record of 229-182.  Trying to repeat last season’s record of 17-8 may be difficult as these Pirates return just two starters from last year’s squad. Returning this year are two juniors, Weston Cloyd and Bryston Hooten.

Cloyd was named to the All-SWCL as an Outfielder and to the All-District Team as well. Cloyd hit .339 last year and drove in 12 runs, while stealing 4 bases.  Hooten, a catcher, was named All-SWCL and All-District. He hit .293 while driving in 8 runs. Both players will be counted on to increase their offensive potential while playing stellar defense.

“We hope to have some inexperienced players step up and play huge roles on the team,” said Harmon.  “After losing so many key players to graduation the past two years, we need people to step up and become varsity players.”

Returning outfielder Trevor Clark is the lone letter winner that will be a senior but he is joined by two juniors and three sophomores. Juniors Hunter Brantley, a first basemen, and Caleb Head, a starting pitcher, will be asked to play a bigger role this year.

Pitching in a limited role last year, Head was 1-0 with a 1.11 era. Filling out the infield will be sophomores Colton Elder, 1st base, Harley Howard, third base, and Colby Smith at second base.

Newcomers to this year’s team include senior Tanner Gold, sophomore Brent Williams and freshmen Bryston Branstetter and Nick Brannan.

“We always pride ourselves on being competitive and being that team that others do not want to play come post-season time,” said Harmon.  “Our players have worked very hard in the off-season to take their games to the next level.”
