Last year was one of those dream seasons for the Clever Lady Bluejays, advancing all the way the state quarterfinals before losing 2-1 to eventual state runner-up West County. This year’s team, though, was left with a bitter taste in their mouths after that defeat and is looking to make it to the final four this season.

In her fourth season as head coach of the Lady Jays is Cheryl Grant, who was named SWCL Coach of the Year.  Grant and the rest of her Jays feel there is some unfinished business this year.

“The girls got a taste for postseason play last year and they want to make it to the final four this year,” said Grant. “Overall, we want to improve every game, work hard, and be supportive of each other. Last year the conference title eluded us and we want to be sure that does not happen again this season.”

Clever returns seven starters from last year’s squad, including 2nd team all-state Emily Mendenhall. Mendenhall, a junior, had an era of 2.88 and struck out 127 in just 116 innings. Not only can Mendenhall do the job on the mound, she contributes at the plate as well, hitting .551, slugging .936, and hitting 3 home runs while driving in 36. She was named to 1st Team All SWCL, 1st All District and 1st All Regions teams.

Senior Lacey Menzie played shortstop and centerfield for the Jays. She batted .405, drove in 20 runs and stole 22 bases. Menzie was named 1st All SWCL, 1st All District and 2nd All Region. Senior second baseman Emily Valence brings her .319 batting average back to the lineup this year, as well.

Four juniors return as starters for Clever: first baseman Taylor Menzies (1st team All District), 3rd base/outfield Taylor Farmer who hit .383 while driving in 30 (2nd team All District), outfielder Gabby Cole (2nd team All District) and catcher Allison Nolan, who hit .444 and drove in 38 (2nd team All District).

Sophomore Ashley Pearce started games in the outfield for Clever last season. Newcomers trying to get varsity innings this year are sophomore Hanna Wilson (2nd base), and freshmen Ashton Graaf (outfield/catcher), Abi Menzies, (shortstop/outfield/pitcher) and Harper Little (2nd base/pitcher).

Clever had a strong showing last year and intends to improve last year’s 16-8-1 record.

“We lost two talented seniors, but have some strong freshman players that will make an impact during this season,” said Grant. “We have two strong senior leaders in Lacey Menzie and Emily Valence and several talented players that are dedicated to working hard and improving every day. We are looking forward to a fantastic season.”
