Athlete of the Week: Twilah Carrasquillo, Verona

Tristan and Twilah Carrasquillo were both born on June 23rd, one six years before the other.

“They always say I’m her delayed twin by six years, but we’re like complete opposites except for when it comes to basketball,” said Verona senior Twilah.

And both sisters have held the girls all-time scoring record at Verona.

“Tristan was a different player than Twilah. She shot more outside and she was quick as well. Just a great girl to coach,” said Ryan Yates, Tristan’s coach at Verona, now the coach of Hurley. “I wish I would have got the opportunity to coach Twilah, but it was my time to move on.”

Coach Yates saw Tristan set the girls record with 2,019 career points. And six years later, he saw her sister, Twilah, score 2,000 points, and break her sister’s record in the same night, but this time as the other team’s coach.

“I’m very happy she broke 2,000, but not exactly happy she broke TC’s record. No, I’m kidding, I’m very happy for her,” said Yates.

“I’m extremely proud. She’s been telling me that she’s going to beat this ever since I set it and I’ve been telling her she better get there. I’m so happy to pass the torch to my sister,” Tristan said.

Now that Twilah has beat her sister’s record, she’s got her eyes on a bigger goal.

“My goal at the beginning of the year was to just one up her and get 2,020, but now I have a chance to beat the school all time scoring record, so that’s really exciting,” said Twilah. “I guess just keep going. Just finish the year, try to break the school record, and keep it that way for awhile.”

This game puts her at 2,023 career points — only 13 points from tying the school record.
And she hopes to hold the record for awhile, or at least until her freshman brother, Jaiden comes comes along trying to do the same.

“We always argue at home about who’s the best player. I think Twilah’s going to say she has the most points, so she’s the best now. I’m going to try my best to beat that now so I can tell them I’m the best,” said Jaiden Carrasquillo.

For breaking records, Twilah Carrasquillo is this week’s Arby’s High School Athlete of the Week.
