Athlete of the Week: Jessi Hicks, Glendale

swimming is a lifestyle for Glendale’s Jessi Hicks.

‘I do not remember my first experience, because I have been swimming since I can remember,’ said Hicks.

Over the years, coach Steve Boyce has watched her mature as an athlete.

‘She just raised the bar for herself. It’s just awesome to watch,’ said Boyce.

Last year as a junior, she was on the state championship 400 free relay team.

‘Oh gosh, winning state was amazing. It was probably one of the best days of my life,’ said Hicks. ‘Last year I was really close with a lot of the seniors that graduated. I swam with them for most of my life. It was such a cool moment to see all of our hard work pay off.’

That ‘raise the bar mentality’ has made Jessi a leader in the pool, and, in her school.

‘I wanted to have a leadership role at the school and be involved, so I was like ‘why not run for president?’ so I did. and I won,’ Hicks said.

But when it comes to comparing those wins —

‘Winning State was definitely a better feeling because that was a lot of hard work,’ Hicks said.

Swimming trumps all.

‘Swimming is a sport where you can’t just show up to practice and then be good. You have to train and you have to work hard to reach your goals, and you have to set goals,’ said Hicks.
