Athlete of the Week: Gage Singer, Aurora

Aurora’s got this baseball thing figured out.

“We probably focus on our pitching more than we do any other position,” said head coach James Hoffman. “We had some pretty good guys on the mound last year.”

Guys like Wyatt Sparks, who got drafted to the Texas Rangers, Matthew Miller who landed a spot at Missouri Southern, and Austin Erickson. As juniors, this group helped the Houn Dawgs win the programs first State Championship in 2017, and their second the very next year.

“Last year going into the season, we knew to win another one we knew we had to have another power arm, we didn’t know where it was going to come from,” Hoffman said.

But coach Hoffman didn’t have to look very far.

“And then Gage came to us and was like coach I want to throw this year. We were like giddy little school children. Because we knew he was the piece,” said Hoffman.

“I’ve always just kind of wanted to try it, and last year I got the chance to and started working on it,” said Houn Dawgs senior Gage Singer.

The top ranked player in the sate went 4-0 on the mound last season, with a fast ball reaching the 90s, making him the 41st prospect in the Draft.

“I just love the game, grew up around it. I played it my whole life and it’s just really what I love to do,” said Singer.

But in his senior season the stand out shortstop doubles as the Houn Dawgs’ new ace.

“I’m just going out there and having fun really, just enjoying my last year and my friends and everything,” Singer said.
