Springfield Cardinals Reporting
The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Springfield Cardinals 1B Jonathan Rodriguez has been named the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for April. Additionally, 2013 Springfield Cardinals LHP Tim Cooney earned the organization's Pitcher of the Month award.
Rodriguez, 24, hit .346 (27-for-78) with nine doubles, four home runs and 15 RBIs during the month. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native ranked second in the Texas League and seventh among all Double-A players with a 1.059 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. He was named the Texas League Player of the Week for April 21-27 batting .519 for the week with six doubles. In 21 total games in the month, Rodriguez tallied eight multi-hit games and four three-hit games.
It is the second career monthly award for Rodriguez, who was the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month in June of 2013 while with High-A Palm Beach. He was selected by the Cardinals in the 17th round of the 2009 June Draft out of Manatee Community College in Florida.
"Jonathan started strong both defensively and offensively in Springfield, hitting for average and showing his power potential," said Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.
Cooney, 23, has gotten off to a great start in his first Triple-A campaign, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.35 ERA through five starts with the Memphis Redbirds in April. Four of his five outings were quality starts, while he held opposing batters to just a .120 average (3-for-25) with runners in scoring position throughout the month.
The Collegeville, PA native spent the majority of 2013 with Springfield, going 7-10 with a 3.80 ERA through 20 starts, striking out 125 batters through 118.1 innings. He won the Texas League Player of the Week award in consecutive weeks last year for August 5-11 and August 12-18. Cooney was selected by the Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 2012 June Draft out of Wake Forest University.
