Lady Bears fall at 7th ranked Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Missouri State (1-5) got a career-high 11 points from senior guard Desiree Phillips and placed three scorers in double figures overall, but it was not enough as seventh-ranked Louisville (8-1) handed the Lady Bears a 91-49 loss Tuesday night at the KFC Yum! Center.

Missouri State got off to a slow start with just one basket before the first media timeout, and the second of consecutive 3-pointers by Louisville's Shoni Schimmel put the Cardinals ahead by double figures for good at 15-4 with 14:22 to play in the first half.

MSU's
Rachel Swartz scored the first two buckets of her career 39 seconds apart later in the half, and the Lady Bears shot 41 percent as a team in the period but trailed 55-30 as the Cardinals shot 61 percent and forced 13 MSU turnovers.

Phillips buried a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half, setting new career highs with 11 points and three makes with her trey at the 13:18 mark, and Kenzie Williams added another just 35 seconds later to put herself in double figures for the sixth consecutive game and make the score 64-41 with 12:43 to go.

After Hannah Wilkerson drained MSU's fourth trey of the second half with 10:51 to play, the Lady Bears hit just two field goals the rest of the way as the Cardinals turned their 71-44 lead into the final margin.

Missouri State ended the game shooting 18-for-53 from the field and 6-for-24 from 3-point range, while Louisville shot 56.5 percent overall. The Cardinals held a 39-29 rebounding edge and forced 24 MSU turnovers.

Williams led MSU in scoring with 13 points,
Tyonna Snow had 12 and Phillips added 11. Seven players shared the rebounding lead with three each, and freshman Lexi Hughes dished out a team-high three assists.

The Lady Bears visit Eastern Kentucky (4-5) Thursday at 6 p.m. Central.
