Kickapoo scores 33 unanswered to beat Parkview

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Kickapoo fell behind early to Parkview, but the Chiefs would score 33 unanswered points on the way to a 39-25 Ozark Conference win to open the season.

The Vikings drew first blood with a 30-yard Taylor Middlebrooks field goal. Parkview looked to be in control after and interception deep in Chiefs territory which set up a 32-yard Anthony Gilliland to Connor Ratcliff touchdown.

The rough start for the Chiefs and Kickapoo signal caller Anthony Cooper would smooth out.

“It was difficult [to stay focused] at first but I settled down a bit and started hitting my open guys,” said Cooper of the rough start, where two of the Chiefs following three drives ended in fumbles.

Kickapoo’s first score came on a punt reverse which was taken to the house by senior Kelton Reeves on the first possession of the second quarter. The Chiefs would later take the lead on a one-yard Tony Grant touchdown rush.

Cooper tallied over 200 yards of offense through the air and an additional 100 on the ground, including a 68-yard scramble score to begin the second half and make it 25-10 Chiefs.

Defensively the Chiefs kept the Vikings to 30 yards rushing on fourteen carries in the first half.

“Once we got some pressure on the quarterback in the second half we shut them down,” said Chiefs’ coach Joel Wells, adding “the number one thing was they couldn’t run the ball on us. We made them one dimensional.”

Kickapoo increased its lead to 33-10 before Parkview scored two late touchdowns.

Parkview continues conference play on the road against Joplin (1-0). Kickapoo will travel up I-44 to face Rolla (0-1).
