Lebanon overcomes turnovers to top Rolla

Lebanon, Mo. (For  -- The Lebanon Yellowjackets made it five straight over Ozark Conference rival Rolla on Friday, overcoming five turnovers en route to a 27-7 runaway win.

The 'Jackets opened the contest by taking a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter but an interception by Rolla senior Joe Drallmeier opened the door for the Bulldog's only score of the contest.
Lebanon (1-0 overall, 1-0 Ozark Conference) got two touchdowns 143 yards rushing on 21 carries from junior running back Elza Evans, but it was largely the play of a dominant LHS defense that overcame the five miscues.
The 'Jackets held Rolla without a first down throughout nearly the entire first half as the Bulldogs went three plays and punt on its first four possessions, then fumbled the ball away on its fifth.
The second half was more of the same as Rolla finished the contest with just 143 yards of total offense.
"It is good to get some momentum going with the first game and hopefully we can finish out with some momentum," senior captain Austin Leochner said. "The effort from our guys all-around, on the offensive line and the defensive line it was good. That makes up for mistakes and the rough edges that we have and we'll get that fixed in practice."
Rolla head coach Willie Howard said poor tackling hurt the Bulldogs get key stops on the defensive side of the ball.
"I thought we were in the right spot most of the time, we just didn't tackle very well when we needed to tackle," Howard said. "We kind of gave up some big plays and Lebanon took advantage of us. Offensively, we have to get the ball moving a little more, we had way too many three and outs. Our defense played a lot and it will help us out in the long run if we can stay on the field longer with the football."
Lebanon opened the scoring on its first possession as the 'Jackets went three plays to paydirt. Sophomore quarterback Luke Winfrey hooked up on his second varsity play with Josh Archer for a 57-yard catch and run and on the next play Evans scored from four yards.
LHS fumbled the ball away in Rolla territory on its second possession and were at the Rolla 22-yard line on its third possession, but threw an interception.
A big punt return by senior Dylan Bradshaw set up the 'Jackets at the Rolla 35 on Lebanon's fourth possession and Adam Newell  scored from three yards out with 47 seconds remaining to give the 'Jackets a 14-0 lead.
Lebanon (1-0 overall, 1-0 Ozark Conference) went up 21-0 early in the second quarter as Michael Dalangin capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive with a two-yard plunge.
The second half was all LHS as the 'Jackets scored the only points on a three-yard run by Evans with 7:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs punted on each of its five possessions in the second half and recorded just two first downs.
"We just could never get it going, we spun our tires for the first four drives going into the second quarter, then could never get it started up again (in the second half)," Howard said.
Lebanon got 344 yards of total offense, and Winfrey was 9 for 17 passing for 129 yards. Bradshaw had two catches for 21 yards, Austin Knight had four catches for 32 yards and Archer had two catch for 57 yards.
"Our kids work hard day in and day out," Lebanon head coach Will Christian said. "We come out and practice for three hours and we condition and we run a high paced offense in practice, which is basically conditioning. So, I felt very confident that our football team would be able to handle the conditions and play hard the whole night."
Both teams battled warm conditions that pushed the start time back 30 minutes and saw numerous water breaks interrupt the flow of the contest.
"It was a long and hard night, but coach Christian got us prepared conditioning wise," Lebanon senior Austin Evans said. "We've been working hard at practice."
