Sparta volleyball seeking district title in Class 2

Sparta, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Emily Winkle begins her 12th season as Sparta’s head volleyball coach with a career record of 158-145-20.  The Lady Trojans moved up a class to Class 2 last year after having won three straight Class 1 district titles. Sparta was young last year and bowed out in the first round of the Class 2, District 10 tournament versus Forsyth.

The Lady Trojans had a 15-14-2 record last year but that was only good enough to garner them the sixth seed as the district had volleyball powers Fair Grove (28-5), Strafford (23-6), Conway (14-14-1), and Forsyth (24-6-1).

Sparta returns several girls that started games at some point in the season last year. The Lady Trojans will be led by three All-Conference players, junior Morgan Davis (also All-District), junior Meg Moles, and junior Cailyn Long.

Seniors Kaylee Baughman, Alex Rogers and Michaela Stockton and junior Brandi Stevens were others who started games for Sparta. Junior Alexis Alexander and senior Morgan Crosswhite will bring varsity experience and depth to a squad that only lost one senior (Nicole Jenkins) off last year’s team.

“Top three in conference, district finalist, 20-plus wins”, said Winkle of the 2013 goals. “After a year of rebuilding I feel good going into this season with the work we have put in. “
