O-Zone Kickoff Week: New offensive strategy to Greenfield

Greenfield, Mo. (  -- After finishing 3-7 last fall in his first season as head coach, Aaron O'Laughlin believes transitioning to a throw-dominated offensive spread will bring more wins and closer games to the Wildcat’s schedule.

HEAD COACH: Aaron O'Laughlin

2012 RECORD: (3-7) Lost 18-7 to Lockwood in districts

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Anthony Schwindler (Sr. WR/CB), Brendan Black (Sr. WR/QB/CB), Hunter Montez (Sr. QB/WR/CB), Kelby Davis (Sr. TE/LB), and Lane Hankins (Sr. WR/CB).

2012’s offensive strategy was an I-Pro base formation, in effort to conserve as much clock and to keep the ball in Greenfield’s hands as much as possible. Unfortunately the results weren’t what O’Laughlin was expecting.

“Last year I didn’t do a good enough job spreading the ball around offensively,” said O’Laughlin. “We’re going to focus on getting the ball into the playmaker’s hands, by throwing and moving the ball around to our skilled positions to give us the biggest shot at scoring more points."

On the defensive side, the Wildcats have more experience and they plan to utilize speed to their advantage against larger offensive teams.

25-year old O’Laughlin always is looking for his team to improve each practice, game, and season. His youth might show some inexperience, but he believes there are positives to bringing a young perspective to the coaching role.

“As a young guy you learn a lot from your first season and I hope to pick up from last year coming into 2013,” said O’Laughlin. “I think the kids enjoy the younger mindset. I think one big thing for me and for the players is them getting to know me, and me getting to know them. It takes a year to get use to how practices are being run, program rituals, how plays are called, and hopefully learning from each other will benefit us this year.”

Greenfield jumpstarts their fall season on the road at Lockwood Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
