O-Zone Kickoff Week: West Plains looking to end losing skid

Steve Ary, who’s also been a head coach at Mtn. Grove and Willow Springs, is now in his second year at West Plains.  And he believes that while the program has a long way to go, it has made improvements.

“We had to change the culture,” Ary explains.  “The kids never had been in the weight room the way they should have.  And we’re working with the young kids and trying to build the program from there.  Our Mighty Mite program has been a rec league that never competed outside West Plains.  We’re gonna get outside town this year.  The results are gonna be down the road.  I may be a grandpa by then.”

Ary has 10 returning starters from last year’s winless team, and says he thinks the losing skid will come to a halt this season.

“Our skills are better and we’ve been working on our speed development,” he said.  “We’ve got some skill players and three offensive linemen returning.  We have six starters back on defense but we’re still small. We don’t have Ozarks Conference size.  And we’re playing too many sophomores.  It’s gonna be tough but we can only work on what we can control.  We can outwork people and play smarter.  And hopefully, we will use some smoke and mirrors to catch ‘em off guard.”
