The Springfield Lasers prevailed through a super-tiebreaker to clinch a first place spot in the Mylan World Team Tennis Western Conference Thursday night after overcoming the Sacramento Capitals at Cooper Tennis Complex, 20-19.
In the opening event, Springfield’s Men’s Doubles team of Jean-Julien Rojer and Rik De Voest dominated the court, claiming a 5-2 win to give the Lasers an early lead over the Capitals.

Springfield continued their winning ways into the second event, as Alisa Kleybanova and Rojer defeated Sacramento’s Mixed Doubles team, 5-3. Olga Govortsova and Mark Knowles tied the Lasers 3-3 through the first six games, but Knowles was then replaced by Ryan Sweeting before losing the remaining two games.
De Voest came up short for Springfield during Men’s Singles, winning only 47% of his first serve points which forced a 5-3 loss to Sacramento’s Sweeting.
The Lasers led 13-10 at the half heading into Women’s Singles, but Sacramento’s Govortsova was on her game, rallying a quick 4-0 lead over Vania King, who was then replaced by Kleybanova. Springfield’s changeover didn’t seem to phase Govortsova at all, as she closed up the event with a 5-1 victory to gain the Capitals’ first lead of the night, 15-14.

Trailing 4-2 in the final event, Springfield’s Women’s Doubles team of King and Kleybanova battled back to tie Sacramento 19-19, forcing a super-tiebreaker. The Laser duo would go the distance to knock off the Capitals 7-2 in the final game of series.
Springfield improves their season to 6-3, as they share first place in the Western Conference with the Orange County Breakers. The Lasers will host the Philadelphia Freedoms Saturday, July 20 at 7:05 p.m.
