MONETT, Mo. --  "There's been a lot of nice people, not my family but nice people," Late Model Racer, Justin Wells said.

But the love of racing can be seen every race at the Monett Speedway.

"Family that races together, stays together," Cole Wells said.

Seventeen year old Cole is a third generation driver at Monett.  Making left turns against his father Justin.

"I never was able to race against my father," Justin said, "watching my son is cool, but I get real nervous."

"It takes away from your concentration; how's he doing.   During cautions I'm always looking for him; where he's at."

The Wells aren't the only three generation family racing at Monett.  The Essary's also hit the dirt on Fridays led by National Dirt Track Hall of Famer Ken Essary.

"I've seen a lot of things come and go, Ken said.

"I remember going to races, watching him when I was little," Leslie Essary said.  "I was five or six when he started racing."

Along with son Leslie, Ken also shares the track with grandson 17-year-old Garrett.

"When Leslie started racing, that was nerve racking, now Garrett will be a senior, i think it's even more nerve racking," Ken said.

"I'm hoping to outrun my grandpa, he's been doing it for 42-years," Garrett said.

While there is competition between the generations, they maintain blood is thicker than 5-W-40 motor oil.

"Even though we're competing," Ken said, "we're still sharing information."

And as far as added a fourth generation to the track, the greenhorns of the families both agree...

"Not any time soon," Garrett said.

"That's a long ways off," Cole replied.

The Monett Speedway season continues every Friday through August 16.

Ken Essary is currently first in points for the late models followed by Justin Wells.  At third and fourth are the 17-year-olds, Garrett and Cole respectively.
