1 Awards: Injury sends Kickapoo's Trey Upton to the pool

Soccer was Trey Upton’s sport growing up. That is, until a hip injury ended his career on the pitch.

Upton then moved to the pool and turned himself into a state-level swimmer.

“We’re an athletic family,” Upton said. “It’s either work or play sports.”

Last fall, Upton swam at state in four events: the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, 200 medley relay, and the 100 breaststroke. He made it out of prelims to day two in all but the 200 freestyle relay.

Upton finished eleventh in his specialty event, the 100 breaststroke. He was the anchor on the 200 medley relay team that placed tenth.

Overall, not a bad way to finish a three-year career, he said. He admitted he was “bad” when he first came out to the KHS swimming.

“My first year at practice, we have slow and fast lanes, I was in the slowest of the slow lane,” Upton said. “I couldn’t keep up. I’d say going into my junior year was when I got to be at least decent. I found that my specialty was the 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.”

If he could get a re-do, Upton would’ve gone out for swimming his freshman year.

“I wish I had started then,” he said. “It kind of bums me out. It makes me wonder and think that I could’ve gotten to an all-state level.”

But soccer was his sport, until a hip problem. Upton said the injury made it painful to kick a soccer ball, but didn’t affect him in the pool.

“I tore off a piece of my hip,” he said. “I didn’t break it, but I couldn’t play soccer anymore.”

Upton said he enjoyed the team aspect of the relay events the most.

“With the relays, it’s a lot more fun,” he said. “You’re part of a team then, and you have to rely on each other. When you’re in the individual races, there’s no one around and it’s a lot more serious. You’re just by yourself.”
