1 Awards: Beairsto doesn't wait to make impact for Falcons

One of the keys to building a successful athletic program is getting the underclassmen involved with the varsity squad early on. The Glendale Lady Falcons swim team makes a concerted effort to do this through pushing every team member to do their best and also by making sure that everyone is having fun. When this approach is taken, you end up developing freshman phenoms like Macie Beairsto.

Beairsto started her swimming career with club teams such as Springfield Aquatics. She had swum with her future teammates and competitors during this time, but there was still something different about the high school team level.  She made the transition with ease.

“The older swimmers said it would be so much fun, and it was exactly what they said it would be,” said Beairsto.

It was fun, but there was also a lot of pressure to compete and make each other better.

“We were all close, but we were also competitors. Once we got into the pool we were different,” said Beairsto. “The older swimmers would push us to do our best, and it we all wanted to be as good as them.”

The team responded to the pressure in the best way possible. Outside of the pool, they were bonded together as a tight-knit group of friends, and when it came time to compete, well, they were a dominant force from top to bottom. This combination is what Beairsto thinks makes swimming for Glendale so unique.

“We are so close that we aren’t afraid to do anything in front of each other, it intimidated teams because we looked like goofballs, but we were all business when we got in the pool.”

All of the hard work paid off for Beairsto and her team when they arrived at the state meet. The team came out of the gate fast, excelling in the first few events of the day. Although Macie was hampered by turf toe, she was able to grab a sixth-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly and helped her team to a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay.

“It was crazy because I had turf toe, so I had the pain of that on top on the pressure, and that just pushed me harder,” said Beairsto.

She had to go straight to the 200 free next. The point situation had been worked out to then and Macie knew that she had to at least finish second in this event. It was a very close race, but she was able to hold off her opponent and clinch second.

“I could see the girl behind me in the 200 free and I could not let her beat me, it was close, but I was able to hold on,” said Beairsto.

The Falcons had basically clinched the team title after this, but they still had the 400 free relay to go.

“We just said, why not just go out and win it? And we just swam our hearts out and pulled it off,” said Beairsto.

This was the perfect way to punctuate the Lady Falcons amazing year. Possibly the most exciting part about all of this for Macie and her team (and the scary thing for the competition) is that all of the state competitors will be returning next year.
