Hawkins' homer lifts Billings in sectional win

A solo home run off the bat of Sawyer Hawkins in the top of the second inning was enough for Billings, as the Wildcats shut down the Purdy offense and captured the Class 2 Sectional victory over the Eagles, 2-0.

“Purdy’s pitcher Cameron Terry left one of his curve balls hanging and I wasn’t going to waste that pitch," said Hawkins.

Hawkins definitely didn't waste the pitch, as the Wildcat planted the homer over the left field wall to the delight of the packed out Billings crowd.

That run would be enough for the Wildcats, as junior Dawson Meyer allowed three hits over the course of seven shutout innings on the mound. Meyer struck out six Purdy batters, including the last two with the tying runs on second and third base.

"After Hawkins hit that bomb, I felt like I settled in on the mound," said Meyer. "I have pretty good command of my stuff and did my best to keep them off-balance."

Billings’ head coach, Allen Stolte, agreed with the momentum Meyer earned after Hawkins’ homerun.

"Meyer got in a pretty good groove, doing a great job locating his pitches,” said Stolte. “They hit the ball hard, but right at our defense."

Cameron Terry (12-11) pitched well for the Eagles, giving up four hits to the host Wildcats, striking out seven batters through a seven-inning complete game.

"I made a mistake early and it cost me,” said Terry. “I can't leave a ball up to hitters like Hawkins.”

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the fifth inning on Nathan Smith’s RBI single to right field, scoring Austin Essick from third base.

"This bunch is tight," said Stolte. "I told the seniors they had bookends on their high school baseball careers."

As freshmen, this same senior bunch advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2010.

Billings (13-8) will play the winner of the Belle vs. Hartville contest in the state Class 2 Quarterfinals May 22.
