Damon Seiger named new Marshfield boys basketball coach

Springfield, Mo. (  -- Damon Seiger has been hired as the new head coach of the Marshfield Blue Jays.

Seiger brings head coaching experience from Fordland and El Dorado Springs along with seven years as an assistant at Ozark and Hillcrest.

It is Seiger’s experience under long-time Ozark head coach Steve Hunter and Hillcrest head coach John Schaefer that made him an attractive option for Marshfield.

“He spent the last few years sitting one chair down from two of the most successful coaches in Southwest Missouri and two of the most successful programs in Southwest Missouri,” Marshfield Athletic Director Kevin Armstrong said. “That in itself makes him very attractive and he has experience as a head coach. He is a good fit for what we are trying to do here at Marshfield.”

Seiger, a Missouri State graduate, agreed on that feeling of a good fit.

“I think things are sometimes about a fit and everything seemed to fit,” Seiger said. “I am familiar with the Central Ozark Conference being at Ozark for seven of my 12 years in coaching and being in the same district (as Marshfield) last year. I am very familiar with the community and the program as a whole.”

His experience under Hunter and Schaefer has been invaluable since 2007.

“I feel like I have worked under two of the best coaches in not only Southwest Missouri but in the state of Missouri,” Seiger said. “As far as their two coaching styles, the perspective is that they are very different, but I think the reality of it is they still get the same result. They are very similar in regards to getting the most out of their kids and bringing their program to a very high level.”

Seiger replaces J.C. Carter who won two Central Ozark Conference Small titles in two years leading Marshfield. Carter left to become an assistant at Division II Angelo State in Texas.
