Catholic shutout top ranked Forsyth

Springfield Catholic starting pitcher Matthew Tipton threw six innings of scoreless baseball Monday night, giving up five hits, issuing one walk and one hit batsmen in the Irish’s big win over No. 1 ranked Forsyth, 6-0.

“It was good to just get a win and battle back,” Tipton said.

Tipton credited the strong defensive approach that stifled Forsyth’s offense.

“He did a great job pitching to contact,” said Forsyth head coach Jim Julian. “He kept us off balance, stayed effective in the zone, and the defense made some great plays.”

Tipton’s fellow teammate, Eric Atwell, saw a lot of action on both the defensive end at first base, and offensively after knocking out a homerun to right field, grabbing the first run in the bottom of the opening inning. Atwell would conclude the game with a 2-for-3 finish with two RBIs and a walk.
“We came in knowing we had to battle after playing them twice last year,” Atwell said.
After being ranked first in the state on Friday morning, Forsyth’s head coach didn’t feel like this didn’t factor into his team’s performance.

Catholic’s head coach, Jason Daugherty, felt Forsyth’s ranking was well deserved, regardless of their loss.
“They’re a scary team, but I hope we do get to see them again,” said Daughtery. “That means we’re both having success, but at the same time they’re a very competitive ball club."

Daugherty also praised his defense and Tipton’s pitching performance.
“He’s been good all year but he didn’t have his best stuff today. He got into trouble but worked his way out of it thanks to our defense,” said Daugherty.
Springfield Catholic is now 9-2 on the season, while Forsyth falls to 10-2.
