Webb City put itself in an early hole against Sullivan. But as coach Brad Shorter reminded his players during a timeout, there was still a lot of game left to be played.
Webb City gave up the game’s first seven points then seized control the rest of the way, winning 55-39 in a Class 4 quarterfinals matchup Saturday afternoon at Drury’s O’Reilly Family Event Center.
“Your start doesn’t determine where you finish,’” Shorter said. “I just told them, ‘That’s not how we wanted to start, but we’re still fine. Let’s do something about it.’”
The second and third quarters made the difference. Webb City outscored Sullivan 13-5 in the second and 16-7 in the third.
Webb City got hot from the 3-point line in the third quarter. Freshman Lexey Kneib came off the bench and hit two straight 3-pointers to stretch Webb City’s lead to double digits.
“I think early we were playing not to lose,” Shorter said. “After that slow we start and especially in the second half, we played harder. We played to win.”
Webb City, which has no seniors, was led in scoring by junior Mikaela Burgess, who had 13 points. Casey Heger added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Shorter thought Sullivan would try to use its height advantage to score inside. When that didn’t work, the Lady Eagles were forced to take outside shots. The results were not good.
Sullivan shot 15-for-57 from the field overall, including 2-for-19 from 3-point range.
Junior Aleyssia Lucas led Sullivan in scoring (15) and rebounding (12).
