The Lady Bears fell to 14-16 overall and 6-12 in the league, good for eighth place and a matchup with ninth-seeded Drake (10-19, 5-13) at 4:05 p.m. Thursday (March 14) in the first game of the 2013 MVC Tournament in St. Charles, Mo. The Shockers improved to 21-9 and finished the league schedule at 15-3.
Wichita State built its lead early with a 24-4 run to go ahead 30-12 with 9:38 to play in the first half, and led by as many as 22 points before Whitney Edie scored eight straight MSU points and Karly Buer added a jumper to cap a closing 10-1 run for a 39-26 halftime score in favor of WSU.
Buer began the second period with another basket to make it 39-28, but the Shockers had the advantage back at 21 points with 13:45 to play, leading 54-33 at that point and 57-38 before the Lady Bears rattled off an 8-0 run with four different players scoring to close to 57-46 with 9:02 left.
The Lady Bears had the deficit under 10 points with 6:52 to play on Buer’s 3-pointer from the corner for a 61-53 score, and the Snow sisters made it a 10-0 run as Tyonna hit a layup and Bry converted a 3-point play with 5:26 remaining for a 61-58 deficit.
Edie twice pulled Missouri State within a point with under five minutes to play, the second with 4:11 on the clock, and it was a four-point game with 1:41 to play when the Shockers pulled down three offensive rebounds and forced a turnover to keep the ball until 25.3 seconds remained. WSU hit five free throws from there for the final margin.
Missouri State shot 56.3 percent in the second half against the league’s top defensive team, though WSU did block 13 shots in the contest, a record for a Lady Bear opponent, to keep MSU at 41.3 percent for the game.
Edie led MSU with 21 points and seven rebounds in her final home game, and Buer (13) and Kenzie Williams (10) joined her in double figures.
The Shockers held a 42-38 rebounding edge. Missouri State’s 19 offensive boards pushed its season total to 528, a school record.
Wichita State was led by Jazimen Gordon’s 20 points and 13 rebounds.
