State Championship Preview: Eminence Redwings

Last night Eminence shocked the state, pulling its best David impression to knock off No. 1 Drexel. Now, on the heels of the biggest win in school history, the Redwings now find themselves in their first state championship in school history. On Saturday, Eminence will lock up with Stanberry, a 51-47 winner over No. 3 Meadville.

Why Disney should make a movie – The Redwings have the best story of any team in the Final Four. Not only did they avenge their loss in last year’s state tournament to eventual champion Scott County Central. Eminence then knocked off the state’s top team in a thriller that saw the Redwings rally from late fourth quarter and overtime deficits, and then hit a buzzer-beating three to land them in the title game, the first in school history. Also, Eminence coach Pete McBride is an Eminence grad (Class of 1991), making history at his alma mater. In the only head coaching job he’s ever had, McBride has guided his Redwings to six district titles and 273 wins.

Who gets the lead role – Danny McBride as Pete McBride: Danny would be the best option to play his namesake as “Coach McBride”. On the sidelines, Pete is as animated as they come, never afraid to join his team in an emotional moment. He is also quite the quote in post-game press conferences. Although it would be a little different role for the usually silly Danny McBride, his role as Pete would offer him a chance to maintain his sense of humor, while also showing his ability as a serious actor.

Who plays the villain – Ryan Jensen: The 6-foot-6 Stanberry forward is a load inside. The junior had 10 points and three rebounds in just 16 minutes of play in the semifinals against Meadville. Although he is not the Bulldogs’ biggest threat, his size and length make him a factor on the offensive glass, which wasn’t a strong point for Eminence in the semifinals against Drexel.

How the movie ends – This movie should have a typical Hollywood ending. The Redwings are hot, winners of 13 straight, and have knocked off the two biggest giants in Class 1. McBride has solidified himself as a big-time coach, making genius in-game strategy changes to combat the highly touted Bobcats of Drexel. The play of the Redwings’ guards Niko Danding and Jesse Lacey has been big time on both ends of the floor and Logan Dyer inside is absolute relentless in his pursuit of the ball. If Eminence can manage the emotions of the moment, and not be too high from Thursday night’s win, the Redwings should bring home the first state championship in school history.
