The Crocker Lady Lions still have not lost to a Class 2 team.
On Wednesday, Crocker improved to 27-2 as the Lions defeated off Seymour 63-57 in a Class 2 sectional game played at Lebanon High School. Crocker (27-2)advances to play Crane (27-3) in a quarterfinal game at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield.
"It feels great," Crocker head coach Nancy Ward said. "The kids had their minds set on this since day 1. We're just glad to be back and have a shot."
Last season, Crocker won a district title and then won a sectional game over Fordland at Lebanon High School and advanced on to the quarterfinals, where the Lions fell in overtime to Marionville.
Despite a varsity roster that features just seven players — including four freshmen — Crocker has just two losses this season. The first came to Class 4 Bolivar in the championship game of the Lebanon Central Bank Tournament on Dec. 29, and the second came to Class 3 Dixon on Jan. 3 in a rematch of the Frisco League championship game.
On Wednesday, the Lions got 41 points from freshmen guards Lindsay Medlen and Kelsi York and knocked off Seymour, a team that was 30-0 and advanced to the Class 3 Final Four where they placed fourth. In the offseason, Seymour was reclassified to Class 2.
"They didn't play like freshmen tonight," Ward said.
Seymour (25-4) was within four points with 3:13 remaining on Wednesday and looked to have captured the momentum after picking up the fourth foul on both Medlen and Crocker senior Meagan Wall. Crocker went to the free throw line and had an opportunity to expand its lead to six, but missed the front end of a one-and-one and a basket by Seymour senior Bailey Boring cut the Crocker lead to two (48-46) with two minutes remaining.
But it was as close as Seymour would get.
Crocker got a basket and a 3-pointer from Medlen on consecutive plays to expand the lead to seven (53-46), and after a 3-pointer from Seymour senior Braythan Helms cut the Lion lead to four (53-49), Crocker closed out the game at the free throw line, going 8-for-8 in the final 1:37.
The Lions knocked down seven 3-pointers in the contest and finished the game 16-for-18 from the free throw line.
"They really bared down and went to the (free throw) line with confidence tonight," Ward said.
Helms led Seymour with 21 points, while Randi Deckard added 14 and Sarah Cook added 13 points.
Crocker got 15 points from 5-foot-11 senior Brianna Peterson and four points from senior guard Jenna Mendez.
