Crusaders win HAAC title

Peru, Neb. -- Evangel captured their sixth Heart of America conference championship as they hung on for a 51-50 win at Peru State and MidAmerica Nazarene lost at home to Culver-Stockton 101-92.

The win is Evangel’s ninth straight and their 13th win in 14 games.

The Crusaders prevailed as Peru State missed on two chances to take the lead in the game’s final 15 seconds. A shot in the lane was missed by Jarvis Green-Smoot and after Evangel’s Stephen Cotton missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw, Derrick Williams missed a 20-foot shot at the buzzer for the Bobcats.

Brodie Wingert led the Crusaders with 14 points while Williams had 14 for Peru State.

Peru State held Evangel to 19 points in the second half after the Crusaders owned a 32-24 halftime lead.

Evangel’s win and MidAmerica Nazarene’s loss gives the Crusaders a two-game lead in the conference with only one regular season game remaining. The championship is the program’s second title in three years and their sixth regular season championship in school history.

Evangel ends the regular season at home on Monday hosting 20th ranked MidAmerica Nazarene Monday. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 21 but was postponed by last week’s winter storm. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
