Evangel Indoor track excels at HAAC championship

Springfield, Mo. -- Evangel University indoor track set eight school records, won an event and had a women’s athlete qualify for the NAIA National Championship meet last weekend at the Heart of America conference indoor track and field championships in Lamoni, Iowa.

James Haffner won the men’s 3000 meter race walk completing the event in a school record time of 13:51.59. The junior from Richmond, Michigan qualified for the NAIA national championship meet in the same event earlier this season.

Hannah Cotten set a school record in the 55 meter hurdles running an 8.65 in the preliminary round. The time also qualified her for the national championship meet as well. Cotten finished second in the finals with a time of 8.69.

In other highlights from the meet, the Evangel 4 x 800 meter relay set a school record with a time of 8:23.25. David Donaldson, Aaron Peace, James Ruckdeschell and Caleb Voth finished fifth in the event.

Ryan Bowering set an Evangel record for points in the men’s heptathlon finishing sixth with 3,886 points.

The women’s team set five school records. Dominica Pigford broke a school mark in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.58 in a preliminary round. She finished in fifth place in the finals. Courtney Orange was fourth in the 600 yard run and her time of 1:33.22 was a new school record. Victoria Schmitt set a new school mark in the 1,000 meter run with third place time of 3:18.36.

Evangel’s relay team in the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay also set a new school record. Margaret Dorge, Courtney Orange, Lindsey Wood and Lindsey Mead finished third in the race with a time of 10:29.51.

Both teams finished fifth in the conference championship meet.
 
Cotten and Haffner advance to the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championship Feb. 28-March 2 in Geneva, Ohio.
