However in Dadeville, the leak in question was over the high school basketball court, and it left the Bearcats and the Stockton Tigers without a playable floor on Tuesday night.
With 2:24 left in the second quarter and Dadeville leading 32-22, a steady stream of drops from the evening’s snow-and-rain storm started flowing down near one of the free throw lines. At first the referees tried to towel off the affected area, but the water kept coming. Coaches, game officials, and school officials then huddled together on the court and discussed the situation for a few minutes before deciding to call the game right there and declare it a no-contest.
“There was no way we were going to keep the playing conditions safe for the athletes,” said Dadeville athletic director Brett Rountree. “It’s a ongoing condition we’ve been trying to fix, and we’ve been working at it for a month and a half.
“It’s a big roof, and we just haven’t found the leak yet. It’s affected a couple of our other home games, and we’ve been lucky enough to just get by by wiping the floor a couple of times and moving on.”
Bearcat coach Aaron Beckner said, “I hated to make that decision. I think all of us would rather have played. And it’s too bad it’s on Senior Night, especially with (lone senior) Nick (Yocum). He hit that three to start off the game, and you feel bad for him.”
Stockton coach Mike Kenney said, “I’ve never had a game called due to leaks, but I’ve seen it happen.”
Dadeville’s record stays at 11-10 while Stockton holds at 5-15. The Bearcats are off until Tuesday when they challenge Golden City in the Class 1 district at Willard. Stockton has one more home game on Thursday against Archie before heading to Butler to face Lamar in their Class 3 district.
