Lady Vikings stay sharp in conference play

Springfield, Mo. (For  -- The Parkview Lady Vikings start Monday night’s Ozark Conference game against Waynesville on a 16-3 run and went on to win 58-44.

“We just got the defensive intensity and tempo in our favor early on,” said Parkview coach Keri Nichols.  “We just did what we needed to do to win, which is important this time of the year.”

Junior Aubrey Buckley led the way for the Lady Vikings.  She scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Seniors Kianna McDaniel and Brianna Stiles scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Stiles also grabbed nine rebounds.

“We executed really well tonight,” said Buckley.  “We moved the ball around real well and got good shots.”

Parkview’s game plan strives from its defensive intensity and execution.  The Lady Vikings forced 21 Waynesville turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Tigers 34-23.

“We talked about against a zone, they’re going to make you take a lot more contested shots in the paint instead of outside, which is not what we like,” said Nichols. “We just knew that when they went to a zone, we were going to have to crash the boards hard and get our second and third chances.”

And Parkview did get its chances.  They collected 16 offensive rebounds, 10 of which came in the first-half.

“Coach Nichols told us that this might be the best rebounding team we face,” said Buckley.  “So that made us want to crash the boards harder on offense and make sure we blocked out on defense.”

Waynesville was led by freshman forward Kallie Bildner.  She recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Senior Hannah Finger chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Tigers fall to .500 at 11-11 overall and 4-2 in conference.  They have two games remaining on the season, both coming against conference opponents.  They host Kickapoo on Thursday and travel to Joplin next Tuesday.

Parkview improves to 15-8 overall and 6-1 in conference.  They also have two games remaining; both as well are conference games.  They play host to Lebanon on Thursday and then travel to Ozark Conference leader West Plains on Monday, which could decide the winner of the Ozark Conference.
