Skyline excels in second half to roll Marionville

The Lady Tigers utilized a crucial 21-13 second half run to clinch a Mid-Lakes Conference win over Marionville by a 12-point margin at Drury’s O’Reilly Family Event Center Saturday afternoon.

During the first quarter, a wave of silence filled the arena when Marionville’s arguably best player Josie Young suffered a leg injury, which forced her to sit the rest of the game.

“When Young got hurt, that did change our game plan quite a bit,” said Skyline coach Kevin Cheek. “Offensively we wanted to drive the ball into the lane and kick it out, but our shooting wasn’t really there today. So we focused on rebounding regardless of the lack of size we have.”

Skyline jumped out to an early 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Marionville kept the deficit within reach, finishing the half down by four.

After intermission, the Lady Comets went on a frigid cold offensive streak, only scoring two points in the third quarter thanks in large part to Skyline’s full-court defensive pressure.

Marionville then battled back late the fourth period to come within seven of the Lady Tigers, but Skyline sustained their double-digit lead until the buzzer, improving their season to 17-5.

“I thought our girls did a great job today, considering the atmosphere that we were in at Drury,” said Cheek. “We have been doing better lately, and especially today we did a good job of not letting Marionville slide back in the game. I thought we matched with them well defensively toward the end, so we’re happy with the outcome.”

Skyline’s Krista Gideon paved the way for the Lady Tigers with a game-high 14-point performance, seven of which came in the fourth quarter.

In effort to fill the void, sophomore Jaycie Dishman knocked down 10 points to lead the Lady Comets.

Marionville looks to bounce back from their loss when they square up with conference rival Fair Grove Feb. 7, while Skyline faces-off against El Dorado Springs Thursday night at 6:00 PM.
