Fair Grove, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com) -- Fair Grove took control in the fourth quarter and defeated the Skyline Tigers 71-62 in a Mid-Lakes Conference matchup on Friday night.
“We have played in many games like this all season,” said Fair Grove Coach Tim Brown. “We had just an amazing schedule and we did that so we can prepare ourselves for conference and districts.”
The Eagles were led by Brock Derrick. He scored 28 points, including 7 3-pointer. Although Derrick didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half, it didn’t shy him away at all from taking the same shots in the second half.
“On to the next one,” said Derrick. “Shooter’s mentality is the next shot is going in, whether or not the last shot did or not.”
Coach Brown believes in Derrick and all his players to just keep shooting good shots.
“It’s just trust,” said Brown. “We tell them if they take good shots, they have the green light.”
In what was a packed house, the game, for the most part, never saw a lead of more than six points as there were several lead changes throughout the game. Brown may believe the home court could have paid real dividends in this game.
“Obviously, anytime you can play at home its advantage,” said Brown. “I give our fans and our community credit because every game it’s been this type of environment.”
Only the starters scored for the Eagles. Derrick was helped out by Jayden Happel, who scored 14 points. Deric Link chipped in 13 points. Senior point guard Michael Thomas recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 10 assists.
“I was proud with the way we played tonight,” said Derrick. “Skyline is a good team, very good record and we came out and played hard for the whole game.”
Skyline was led by senior Tyler Curts. He scored 17 points for the Tigers. Sophomore Trey West added 12 while seniors Jared Freddie and Logan Bryan each scored 10.
“This game is a big momentum win and we just talked about stacking wins together,” said Brown. “We just hope to be in the mix of things in the last game of the year.
Skyline falls to 15-6. They have five games left on the season, three of which are conference games. They host Marionville on Tuesday.
With the win, Fair Grove evens their record at 11-11 on the season. They have three games left, all against conference opponents. They travel to Pleasant Hope on Tuesday.
The schedule has been set for the 2013 Blue and Gold Tournament, held Dec. 26-30 on the campus of Missouri State University.
Here are some initial thoughts on the matchups to watch and how the bracket will play out.
