The first quarter of the game started slowly. Clever began the scoring , and Billings kept that score to within a few points. Clever’s full court press frustrated Billings and caused turnovers. Clever began adding to its lead, ending the first quarter with a seven-point edge. The Lady Jays took advantage of more turnovers and fouls in the second quarter and took a 28-17 lead into the half.
“This was a very good game for us. We have played a lot of tough games this year, a win is really good. What I am most proud of is our 22 defensive rebounds tonight and 19 offensive rebounds,” said Weiss. “We haven’t been leading in that category. That is one of the keys for us to score. Our control of the frantic pace of the game was an important part of the night for us. Billings tried to slow it down. We didn’t let them.”
The Lady Jays came out in control of the second-half. Up by more than 15 points in the 3rd quarter, Clever drove the lane with ease. Billings closed the gap to within eight points during the 4th quarter, but Clever continued their scoring, ending the game at 62-44.
”We can’t seem to get on the right track with two, three or four girls playing well on the same night at the same time," said Billings coach Chris Gold. "We had 40 turnovers tonight. It is a constant struggle to get that consistent level of execution that it takes to win these tight ball games."
Clever will next play Blue Eye on Jan.14th, while Billings takes on New Covenant Academy on Jan. 22nd.
