Press carries Camdenton to victory

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Camdenton Lady Lakers came away with a 64-48 road win at Springfield Central on Thursday night after finding success with an aggressive defense.

Camdenton’s aggressive full-court press created over a dozen turnovers in the first half and an early lead, but the Lady Bulldogs of Central managed to keep the game close in spite of a four-minute scoreless streak in the second quarter to the third that put them down 12 points.

“[The press] is our standard thing, but right now we’re just trying to get our girls playing every game and being able to compete for every possession,” said Camdenton coach Stacey Caffey.  “We’ll run into games where we’ll realize we can’t do that, but as long as it works we’ll hang our hat on it.”

The Lady Lakers managed to outscore the Lady Bulldogs every quarter, including a third quarter where their defense only allowed seven points: two coming from free throws by Leann Cody and two field goals from Savannah Rush, one of which was the game’s only made 3-pointer.

“We’ve struggled all year with press breaking and with our ball handling at this point of the season, but once we got across half court we managed to run an offense and put up points,” said Central coach Callie Newton.

Rush and Cody lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Junior guard Whitney Snow led the Lady Lakers with 19, followed by a 14 point night from Alyssa Ripley and 13 from freshman classmate Sophie Shore.

With the loss, Central falls to 3-9 on the season and will face 5-5 Parkview on January 7, while Camdenton will face Rogersville on January 5.
