Chadwick rally falls short against Pleasant Hope

Walnut Grove, Mo. (For  -- The Pleasant Hope Lady Pirates looked like they were going to hand a victory to the Chadwick Lady Cardinals in the first half of the Walnut Grove Holiday Classic. But the Lady Pirates burst into the second half with a fresh defense and solid shooting, to clinch a place in the tournament final Saturday night against Walnut Grove.

The Lady Pirates’ win nearly slipped away midway through the fourth quarter, with a trio of 3-pointers by the Chadwick’s Maddie Hursh, who led her team with 21 points on the night. The Lady Cardinals narrowed a 10-point deficit to two points (57-55), with less than three minutes left in the game.

The Lady Cardinals’ Hailey Stevens tied the game at 61-all with 27 seconds remaining. The Lady Cardinals then committed two fouls that sent the Lady Pirates to the foul line twice, where they sank all four baskets. A 3-pointer by Hursh was not enough to secure a victory, and the Lady Pirates won 65-64.

Pleasant Hope coach Jim Flora was pleased with the way his team rallied.

“I got onto them pretty hard at the half. I just didn’t think we played hard. They really responded in the second half. We played really hard in the second half and held on in the end,” said Flora.

Kari Hillenburg led the Lady Pirates with 28 points.

“We didn’t play very well the first half. We wanted to come out and play really hard the second half, and we did,” said Hillenburg.

Chadwick coach Darin Meinders was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I thought we played hard. We went through a stretch in the third quarter where we didn’t put much effort out, and that put us in a bad situation. Fourth quarter, we played hard. Overall, I was really proud of their effort,” said Meinders.

Pleasant Hope and Walnut Grove play Saturday night at 7:30.
