Nixa makes quick work of West Plains




The Nixa Eagles scorched the nets for 56 first-half points on their way to an easy Blue Division semifinals victory on Friday night.

Austin Ruder scored 17 and Jalen Norman added 16 first-half points as the Eagles beat West Plains 85-51. Nixa faces rival Ozark in the Blue Division title game Saturday  at 6 p.m. at JQH Arena.


Nixa put up 30 points in the second quarter, and made five 3-pointers in the first half. The Eagles also overwhelmed the Zizzers with constant defensive pressure in the backcourt.
 
“That was probably the best all-around first half we’ve had this season,” said Nixa coach Jay Osborne. “I was real proud of our kids’ effort. I thought we showed up ready tonight and played extremely well.”

Nixa started the first and second quarters with big runs. The Eagles led 15-2 three minutes into the game. The Zizzers closed within 26-17 at the end of the first, but the Eagles made dominated the next eight minutes.

By the time West Plains got its first points of the second quarter, a basket from Cole Butler at the 3:56 mark, Nixa led 40-19.

When the Eagles weren’t making field goals, they were either at the free throw line or forcing West Plains turnovers. Nixa made 13 of 17 free throws in the first half, and held West Plains to just five points in the second quarter.

“We’re long all around,” Osborne said. “And we’ve got the athleticism to go with it. I thought we were very active on defense.”
