Things could not have gone much better for Mt. Vernon in its 91-49 win over Trinity in the Ozark Mountain Shootout on Saturday.
“When we make shots and move the ball like we did we are very unselfish. We have a chance to be pretty good,” Mt. Vernon head coach Skip Brock said.

Pretty good proved to be an understatement on Saturday as everything seemed to be working for Mount Vernon. Shots were falling from everywhere and the Mountaineers were creating off of their defense.
It was a theme for the week for the Mountaineers.
“We have had a good week. We shot the ball well on Thursday night and it continued today, but I think the key to this team is when they prepare to play defensively, offense is a lot easier for them,” Brock said. “Because of the focus they had on the defensive end it allowed them to loosen up and make some shots.”
Mt. Vernon went into the half up 54-21. Brock gave his team two options on what to do with the substantial lead out of the break.
“All we told them is that there are two ways to play this second half. You can get sloppy and regress or you can come back and try to continue to improve,” Brock said. “I thought we did (improve). It is hard to sustain that kind of intensity when you have a lead like that. I credit our guys. I thought our guys just continued to play and did the things they did in the first half.”
The blowout provided Mt. Vernon with the chance to get many players on the floor.
“What was really good for us is that our bench got a lot of minutes and we got some guys in that we are going to need to count on later in the season,” Brock said.
The Mountaineers had nine different players score led by Shane Williams’ 23 points. Chandler Myers was right behind with 19 points. Luke Call was the third player in double figures for Mt. Vernon with 11 points.
Mount Vernon has taken some tough early losses to good teams and larger schools, but it is all by design for Brock’s team.
“It (a tough schedule) always does (pay off). That has always been our philosophy. I know a lot of people have a philosophy of you schedule some wins. We never have taken that philosophy,” Brock said. “We know that playing better teams is the way to get better. When you lose to Waynesville, Webb City and Nixa, you are going to know the things you have to do better to beat really good teams.”
Mount Vernon plays next on Dec. 20 against Exeter.
