The Pirates found themselves behind by three points with 33 seconds remaining in the game, at 41-38. The Pirates attempted find a hole in the Mountaineerss defense and sink a three-point shot to tie the game. The Pirates’ opening came, but the shot was no good, and the final score held at 41-38.
“We definitely had a couple chances late. We had a good look to hit it. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. That’s all you can ask for, is a good look,” said Pirates coach Jeremy Nicholson.
The Pirates and the Mountaineers held a close margin throughout the game. After finding themselves down two points at the half, the Pirates pulled ahead of the Mountaineers. The Pirates Kaleb Blackwell sank a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the 3rd quarter to give his team a 31-29 lead.
Nicholson had bumped Blackwell to the varsity team just this week.
The Mountaineers did not allow the Pirates to enjoy their lead long. Zane Phillips scored 5 points early in the 4th quarter, including a 3-pointer. The Mountaineers tried to prevent the Pirates’ lead scorer Cody Allhands from reaching the basket. Allhands scored 4 of his 22 points in the 4th quarter.
The Mountaineers’ coach Skip Brock expects his team to improve.
“We did what we had to in the fourth quarter. At this point in the season, it’s a work in progress. We’re getting better. Our players just have to stay the course. Keep working hard every day to improve, and we’re gonna be okay,” said Brock.
The Mountaineers will travel to Southwest (Washburn) on Dec. 13. The Pirates will play East Newton on Dec. 14 at home.
