Mat Eagles defeat Parkview

Nixa, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Nixa Eagles wrestling team hosted the Parkview Vikings on Thursday night and easily defeated the younger, inexperienced team, 72-9.   The dual contest was never in doubt as nine Nixa wrestlers won their matches by pin fall, many in the first two minutes.
In order to increase the crowd, the Waynesville, Willard and Nixa Junior High teams were wrestling at the same time.  With four mats going simultaneously, it was difficult for a wrestler to keep their focus.

Nixa junior Xyah Ra did not wrestle when Parkview pulled their wrestler at 285.  Ra said “I was going in thinking that I was going to wrestle, but they pulled their wrestler.  I always like to go out there and get my hand raised but I really wanted to wrestle.”

Nixa did not wrestle defending state champion Joe Velliquette, giving some younger, less experienced wrestlers the opportunity to wrestle.

Nixa coach Dustin Martin said, “We sat out some of our starters on purpose tonight; we wanted to get some better matchups.  You’re only allowed 50 matches before district and if you are over 50 you aren’t eligible for state competition.”

The Parkview team remained undaunted and continued to work on their wrestling moves even though they knew they were overmatched in many of the contests.

Parkview coach Garrett Hawkins said, “We knew it was going to be tough coming in, especially since the majority of our team is freshmen and sophomores.  We’ve got two seniors and one junior and we’re still learning.  I’m proud with how aggressively we went out and I saw a lot of positive things even though we lost.”

Nixa junior Ben Melton said, “Tonight I pinned my guy in the first period.  It can be tough wrestling such a young team and staying focused.  We knew we were favored to win, but we still had to have the correct mindset.”

Nixa sophomore Marshall Osborne said, “I go out with the mindset that I am going to win the match because I know I’ve worked hard in practice and I know what it takes to win.  It’s my job to help motivate my teammates by pushing them to work hard in practice which helps make them be a better person.  Wrestling is a discipline sport.”

Coming up next for Nixa will be the Lee’s Summit North Invitational on Friday and Saturday, December 7th-8th.   Parkview will next be competing in the Springdale Tournament on December 7th.
