Athlete of the Week: Republic basketball player Cody Geiger

Republic’s boys kicked off their season this past weekend with a new coach and some new starters this past weekend at their home tournament.

Neither of those factors slowed the Tigers this past weekend.

“You never know what to expect, especially your first time out, as a first year head coach with a new team. The kids really responded well,” Republic’s new head coach Trevyor Fisher said.

That response for the Tigers manifested itself in a 3-0 record and a tournament championship. A key factor in those victories was senior leader Cody Geiger. Geiger looked at home in the new up-tempo offense that Fisher has brought to the Tigers.

“I like the new pace,” Geiger said. “You get teams running. If they are out of shape you can just run on them.”

Geiger’s versatility for his 6-foot-3-inch frame is an asset for the Tigers.

“He has that knack for the ball where he will get offensive rebounds. He will get loose balls. He is very good around the basket with both hands,” Fisher said. “He just has the ability to score in a variety of ways.”

Geiger tries to emulate Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant, but his coach is trying to steer him more into the mold of Creighton’s Doug McDermott.

“I actually told him the other day when Creighton was playing to watch Doug McDermott because he does the same things. He is good around the basket, but he can also step out on the perimeter,” Fisher said.

Geiger’s ability to fill up the stat sheet has Republic primed for another big year.

“I have just challenged him to be assertive every night,” Fisher said. “I told our guys we are good team right now, but I think we can be great.”
