The Lady Comets attempted to come back from trailing throughout the first half. Sophomore Jaycie Dishman put up 11 points in the 3rd quarter, including a trio of 3-pointers. Her effort, along with Whitney Wright’s 3-pointer, helped bring the Comets from behind to as much as a 6-point lead midway into the 3rd quarter (29-23).
The Lady Pirates’ Halee Cashio, assisted largely by Jamie Mauss, fought back with 5 points in the 3rd quarter. The Pirates maintained their intensity under Dishman’s offensive pressure and finished the 3rd quarter in the lead, 36-33.
The Lady Pirates’ coach Brent Milleson praised his team’s composure under pressure.
“I thought we handled adversity pretty well. Our kids didn’t panic. They were able to make some plays. I was very proud of them for that,” said Milleson.
The Lady Pirates held onto that lead and earned the tournament championship.
The foul line offered the Lady Pirates a fair portion of their points. In the 2nd quarter, 7 of the Pirates’ 9 points were posted at the foul line. The 4th quarter tells a similar story, with 6 of the Pirates’ 10 points from the foul line.
Madi Johnson sank 7 of her 8 foul shot attempts, with a total of 11 points for her team.
Milleson expressed admiration for the tournament’s 2nd place team.
“Marionville has a very, very good team. Well coached. They have a couple of special players. They gave us everything we wanted and more,” said Milleson.
The Lady Pirates meet Springfield Catholic on December 6. The Lady Comets face Lockwood on December 3.
