It grew bigger the rest of the way.
After widening that lead to 20 points at the end of the third quarter (56-36), the Lady Wildcats forced the Lady Tigers to limp to a 31-point defeat, with a final score of 73-42.
The Lady Wildcats’ coach, Sandy Wright, wasn’t expecting it to be so one-sided.
“We were scared going in. That’s why I was kind of surprised when we were up 7-0 early,” said Wright.
The first half was dominated by fouls, and Willard sophomore Mariah Stewart was busy at the free throw line, going 8 of 8.
“We kept putting them on the free throw line early. They were 17 for 18 at the free throw line in the first half, so at halftime we discussed that we’ve got to quit fouling them,” said Wright.
The Lady Wildcats pulled ahead in the second half, due in part to the leadership of the coach’s daughter, senior guard Caylee Wright, who led her team with 14 points.
Har-Ber outscored Willard 35-16 in the second half.
“We’ve talked a lot about her [Caylee Wright] stepping up in leadership. I was pleased with that. our post men had a really good game, and we had some off the bench that had a good game,” said Wright.
On Saturday, the final day of the Willard Four-State Class, the Lady Wildcats will play the Ft. Scott Tigers at 1:00. Willard will face the Broken Arrow Lady Tigers at 2:30.
