New players key for Rogersville boys

Many new names will have to fill up the stat sheet in order for the Rogersville boys’ basketball team to match last season’s 21-8 record. The Wildcats pushed Class 4 runner-up Hillcrest to the brink in the district finals, losing 56-50 in overtime.

Gone from that team are stalwarts Joe Young, Colton Woods, Dylan Cole and Aaron Orchard. Senior Justus Boever, a 6-foot-4 forward, is the team’s top returning scorer (6.3 ppg) and rebounder (2.7 rpg).

Head coach – Rod Gorman (17th at school, 26th overall. Gorman has a record of 325-125 with the Wildcats).

Top returning players – Justus Boever; Aaron Freeman (6’2”, senior, F, 1.2 ppg, 1 rpg); Corbin Medley (6’2”, junior, G, 3.1 ppg)

Top newcomers – Brock Gipson (6’1”, junior, F); Tyler Chritton (5’8”, junior, G); Baily Jenkins (5’9”, junior, G); Ben Vinyard (6’3”, sophomore, F); Marcus Gorman (5’10”,  freshman, G).

2012-13 outlook

With plenty of playing time up for grabs, the Wildcats will try to prepare over the winter for a new district field that includes Aurora, Cassville, Reeds Spring, Republic and West Plains.

Coach Gorman says the team still has goals of winning a conference and district championship. With limited size, the Wildcats will play team-oriented basketball and spread the floor to create open looks from long-range.

If the Wildcats’ newcomers can adjust to the varsity level, and maintain steady perimeter shooting, Gorman thinks his squad can post another winning record.

Odds and ends: Rogersville will be the host school for the new-look Class 4, District 11 group… Gorman is closing in on 500 career coaching victories. He begins his 26th season with a 491-211 overall record.
