Exeter looking to improve on one-win season

Springfield, Mo. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Jay Allen’s Exeter Tigers had a rough season going 1-23 last year in his first year at the helm, but expect improvement this season as 95-percent of their scoring returns and the lumps from last season should pay off this year.

“We knew that we would take it on the chin a lot last year. But we also knew that it would pay off as long as we were patient and kept working,” Allen said. “This season will take care of itself as long as we maintain that focus.”

Senior guard Kong Lee will be the focal point of the offense as he averaged 16 points per game last season. Lee should eclipse the 1,000-point milestone early in the season.

Three other starters in junior guards Colten Stringer and James Kho along with senior forward Austin Johnson also return for the Tigers.

Two new faces will also make a difference for the Tigers.

“Our top newcomers are a smooth-shooting sophomore forward, Blake Walker and a transfer from East Newton in sophomore point guard Terry Cook,” Allen said. “Blake had a tremendous summer with us and Terry got to see the varsity floor as a freshman over at East Newton.”

Three seniors are gone from last year’s team in Tyler Kester, Lane Pedergraft and John Kho. While their contributions may not have been evident on the stat sheet, the little things they did will be missed.

“John only scored a few points per game, but did most of the dirty work for us and always took the most difficult defensive assignment,” Allen said.

Allen has high expectations for his team this year.

“We expect to win. We have a ton of experience and athletic ability coming back. The game has slowed down for them and now we are on a level where we will be able to compete every night,” Allen said. “We will be fearless. We will not back down from anyone this season.”
