The Monett football team pulled off a 10-6 upset of undefeated rival Cassville on Monday to advance to the State Quarterfinals against Eldon on Saturday.
Monett, which is 9-3 on the year, has been relying on senior leadership all season and in particular the leadership and ability of Kurran Blamey.
"Kerwin has a God-given ability. He is a very explosive football player. We rely on him on both sides of the football," Monett head coach Chad Depee said. "Offensively we try to get him the ball and feel like if we can get him the ball in a good situation he has an opportunity to take it to the house at any point."
Blamey does a little bit of everything for the Cubs from catching and rushing to ball to playing lockdown defense to throwing timely blocks for his teammates.
"What he does on the blocking side of things is as big as anything because it sets up good things for his teammates. It is huge to have a guy who can do all of those things," Depee said.
Blamey factors into the game even when he is not touching the ball on offense as was evidenced in the win against Cassville.
"Cassville was keying up on some of our main players and I could tell that just being the game that I was one of them. Whenever (Aaron) Hall and I would go out for a fake run, (Chris) Murphy would cut it up the middle (for) 15 yards,” Blamey said. “It is good to know that not only I do something with the ball when I have it, but even when I don't have it I am taking away from their defense and giving more to our offense."
Monett hosts Eldon at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Monett in the State Quarterfinals.
