The Crusaders were less than two seconds away from a win in regulation. Korry Tillery’s offensive rebound and basket with 1.8 seconds remaining broke a tie giving Evangel an 86-84 lead.
Robert Morris tied the game when Evangel was charged with a foul as the Eagles inbounded the ball and Larry Dumas hit two free throws with 1.6 seconds left forcing overtime.
The Eagles outscored Evangel 13-9 in overtime to claim the season-opening win.
Evangel forward Zack Kleine led the Crusaders with 24 points including 18 second half points. Tillery finished with 13 and Jordan Fielding had 12. Robert Morris received 32 points from Brian Bradley while Dumas had 28.
Evangel trailed 40-34 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 52-46 in the second half.
Evangel travels to Missouri Baptist Saturday for a 4 p.m. game in St. Louis.
