DU Volleyball Pulls Out 3-2 Victory Over UMSL



Springfield, MO (Drury Sports Information)  -- Drury seized command early in the decisive fifth set to pull out a 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball victory over Missouri-St. Louis Friday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Alex Smith had a career-best 26 kills as DU won by scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 28-30 and 15-10.

The Panthers improved to 12-14 overall and 4-8 in the GLVC, while UMSL fell to 10-14 and 7-5.

Sara Borneman added 16 kills as Drury put up a .218 attack percentage for the match, including .312 and .417 in sets four and five.

Alexis Dutt had a career-high 64 assists, Brooke Foster had a career-high 32 digs while Smith added 21, and Laynie Timmons posted six blocks for the Panthers, who snapped an eight match losing streak to the Tritons that dated back to 2006.

Chelsea Burkle had 11 kills and Corinne Hoekstra added 10 for the Tritons, who fought off four match points for Drury to rally for the 30-28 win and force the fifth set. But the Panthers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the decisive game and never looked back.

The Panthers return to action Saturday for a doubleheader, hosting Maryville in a GLVC match at 2 p.m. before nationally third-ranked Washburn invades The O' for a non-conference meeting at 6.
