Evangel Rolls Past Avila 54-21




Springfield, Mo. -- Evangel won their fourth straight game with a 54-21 win over Avila at JFK Stadium Saturday in Springfield.
 
The 17th ranked Crusaders scored 44 seconds into the game on a 59 yard run by senior RB Tommy Meyer on Evangel’s second play from scrimmage. They added to their lead moments later when Denzel Billy blocked an Avila punt and Zach Reed ran back the ball 23 yards for a touchdown.
 
The Eagles got within seven on a 14 yard touchdown run by Harley Kreisman with 3:03 left in the first quarter.
 
The Crusaders then reeled off 40 unanswered points.
 
Following Avila’s touchdown, the Crusaders scored on their next play from scrimmage as QB Andrew Brimhall connected on a 70 yard bomb to Jesse Vaughn.
 
Evangel posted 27 points in the second quarter adding scores on a 20 yard interception return by Denzel Pernell, a 40 yard run by Otis Brown, an 11 yard pass from Brimhall to Brown and a 9 yard scoring pass from Brimhall to Shawn Hebert with no time on the clock ending the first half. The Crusaders led 48-7 at halftime.
 
Tommy Meyer had 151 rushing yards on 15 carries while Otis Brown rushed for 120 yards on seven carries. Andrew Brimhall was 14 for 25 passing for 221 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns. WR Jesse Vaughn had 5 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown.
 
Evangel’s four-game winning streak is their longest since 2005. The six wins for the Crusaders also clinches Evangel’s first winning record since 2007.
 
The Crusaders play on the road next Saturday when they travel to Central Methodist for a 1 p.m. in Fayette, Mo.
