Willard scores late to break tie and defeat Rogersville

Willard, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- In a back and forth game, the Willard Tigers scored late in the first half against the Rogersville Wildcats. The Wildcats responded with a successful penalty kick for a goal early in the second half. The game remained tied with five minutes remaining, when the Tigers scored a second goal and ended the game 2-1.

Late in the first half, the Tigers’ Jared Pierceall (sr.) scored an unassisted goal from a corner kick that spun off the goalie and into the Wildcats’ goal. Rogersville coach Brett Wubbena knew this break was uncharacteristic for his keeper.

“He hasn’t made a mistake this year,” said Wubbena.

“I always place the ball on the end line, which is closest to the goal. I went for the shot, and it was not a good corner. It just went right to the goalie’s hands, but it hit the ground a couple times as it went to him, and just bounced off him into the goal,” said Pierceall of his unassisted goal. The first half ended 1-0.

The Wildcats’ Tucker Brown seized his opportunity to tie the game in the 44th minute after a penalty kick was awarded as he drove the ball into the box. Brown’s kick was good, bringing the score to 1-1. Willard coach Tim Magee knew Brown was a player to watch.

“We knew we had to take care and never leave him alone. It scares us every time he touches the ball,” said Magee.

The Wildcats and the Tigers fought to break the tie until Pierceall spotted a chance to grab the lead again in the 75th minute.

“It was one of those moments when you’re just really knowledgeable of everything around you. The defenders weren’t looking at me, so I just played it right up the line to Logan [Mattix], and he was right in front of the goal,” said Pierceall.

“Jared [Pierceall] was able to sidestep one of their players. He hit a beautiful through ball. Logan [Mattix] on the dead run was able to get his right foot on it and just touch it past the left of the keeper and into the net. He said he didn’t even see the ball hit the back of the net,” said Magee.

The Wildcats could not answer the Tigers’ goal in the remaining four minutes, and the game ended 2-1.

Willard plays Neosho on Tuesday, while Rogersville meets Greenwood.
